{"id":2399,"date":"2024-08-18T11:36:00","date_gmt":"2024-08-18T15:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/urbannaturestore.blog\/?p=2399"},"modified":"2024-08-18T11:36:00","modified_gmt":"2024-08-18T15:36:00","slug":"the-moult-is-on","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/index.php\/2024\/08\/18\/the-moult-is-on\/","title":{"rendered":"THE MOULT IS ON"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Have you noticed stray feathers in your bird baths or gardens?\u00a0 This is the time of year when many birds are in the process of moulting.\u00a0 Perhaps you\u2019ve seen patchy looking birds including grackles and red-winged blackbirds, bald cardinals, or maybe blue jays with very few head or neck feathers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/red-tailed-hawk-and-woodpecker-feather-min.jpg?w=686\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2403\" style=\"width:272px;height:auto\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Our feathered friends need to moult to replace damaged feathers with new ones.\u00a0 The timing of this is important as it is taxing on the birds taking a lot of energy.\u00a0 For this reason, most of our songbirds begin this process after their breeding season, and before they migrate to their wintering grounds.\u00a0 American Goldfinches will wait until the end of August before moulting as their nesting period doesn\u2019t begin until late July\/early August and will continue throughout this month.\u00a0 Our songbirds will complete their moult in approximately 4-8 weeks.\u00a0 Migrating birds are the quickest to complete their feather replacement experience in order to ensure the timing coincides with their journey south.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"512\" height=\"640\" src=\"https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/cardinals-6692922_640.jpg?w=512\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2404\" style=\"width:398px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/cardinals-6692922_640.jpg 512w, https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/cardinals-6692922_640-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Larger species such as the red-tailed hawk, will begin moulting in the spring and take until September or October for completion.&nbsp; You may find a wing feather in May or June, and a tail feather in August or September.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can help our backyard birds during this stressful time by offering seeds which are high in protein such as sunflower seeds\/hearts, peanuts and nyjer seeds, as well as suet and mealworms.&nbsp; Water is also very important at this time, so please keep bird baths clean and refreshed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t be concerned if you notice birds looking a little odd or scraggly\u2026 this is a natural process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Happy birding!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jane Paradis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brand Ambassador<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Urban Nature Store &nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you noticed stray feathers in your bird baths or gardens?\u00a0 This is the time of year when many birds are in the process of moulting.\u00a0 Perhaps you\u2019ve seen patchy looking birds including grackles and red-winged blackbirds, bald cardinals, or maybe blue jays with very few head or neck feathers.
