{"id":1883,"date":"2023-01-12T14:25:14","date_gmt":"2023-01-12T19:25:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/urbannaturestore.blog\/?p=1883"},"modified":"2023-01-12T14:25:14","modified_gmt":"2023-01-12T19:25:14","slug":"birds-of-a-feather-flock-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/index.php\/2023\/01\/12\/birds-of-a-feather-flock-together\/","title":{"rendered":"BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER!"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Now that we\u2019re into the cold months of winter you might be noticing small flocks of chickadees, goldfinches and cardinals in trees or shrubs, or arriving at your feeders in larger than normal groups.\u00a0 There were 8 male cardinals in a small tree in the field behind our house today with some females too!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"514\" height=\"435\" src=\"https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img-7061.jpg?w=514\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1886\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img-7061.jpg 514w, https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img-7061-300x254.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 514px) 100vw, 514px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>During the winter these birds will flock together for a few reasons. Safety is one of them.\u00a0 Circling hawks or prowling cats are easier to spot and escape from when birds warn each other with distress calls.\u00a0 When the weather is cold, birds will huddle together for warmth.\u00a0 Last, but not least, you will see them together where food is plentiful.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can help birds by offering food, water and shelter.\u00a0 Seeds that are high in oils and fat such as peanuts and sunflower seeds are a great choice to put in your feeders.\u00a0 Suet is also high in calories and gives them the energy they need to get through cold winter days and nights.\u00a0 Birds will feel welcome at a variety of feeders including hopper, fly-through, cylindrical, suet, and ground feeders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img-5423.jpg?w=768\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1887\" width=\"490\" height=\"654\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img-5423.jpg 1716w, https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img-5423-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img-5423-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img-5423-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img-5423-1536x2048.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 490px) 100vw, 490px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Water is also essential for our feathered friends.\u00a0 Heated bird baths are an option as well as bird bath de-icers.\u00a0 These are all thermostatically controlled, so they don\u2019t come on when the temperatures are above 0 degrees celsius, or 32 degrees fahrenheit.\u00a0 Here\u2019s a tip for you if you think your bird bath de-icer is defective.\u00a0 Put it in a freezer for 2 hours.\u00a0 Remove from the freezer and immediately plug it in, it should start to feel warm to the touch.\u00a0 If you plug it in before freezing it, it won\u2019t produce heat as the temperature in your home is warm.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t have an outdoor electrical outlet, place your birdbath in a sunny location for a few hours a day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shelter is also for birds.\u00a0 If you live in a mature neighbourhood with trees, shrubs and hedges, birds can take shelter there.\u00a0 If you\u2019re in a new area, you can offer roosting pockets or boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img-5325-1.jpg?w=596\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1888\" width=\"446\" height=\"594\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img-5325-1.jpg 596w, https:\/\/test.mppdev.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/img-5325-1-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 446px) 100vw, 446px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Birds bring life and welcome activity to our yards providing us with pleasure and sometimes amusement as we wait for warmer months to arrive.&nbsp; Watch for different species gathering together this winter.&nbsp; Once spring comes, they will separate to defend nesting grounds.&nbsp; For now, they\u2019re one big happy family!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Happy Birding!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jane Paradis<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Urban Nature Store Brand Ambassador<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Now that we\u2019re into the cold months of winter you might be noticing small flocks of chickadees, goldfinches and cardinals in trees or shrubs, or arriving at your feeders in larger than normal groups.\u00a0 There were 8 male cardinals in a small tree in the field behind our house today with some females too!
